CHRISTIAN PARENTING: Limit Setting

All behavior in children is communication. The more frustrated and confused they are, the more loudly their actions speak. Sometimes this takes the form of disruptive behavior and trantrums. Today's parents' have reacted to their relationships with their parents that may have been rigid and distant as many were in the last decades by swinging too far the other way with trying to be friends with their kids. While the former probably contributed to repressed insecure adults, the latter contribes to many children today have difficulty respecting authority and lacking in self-control.

Although difficult, it is possible to strike a balance between discipline and promoting confidence. A key to this balance is parent's making it clear that they are in charge and giving children clear rules/boundaries for their behavior. If they do not follow the rules, it is important to set limits and acknowledge their feelings/experience that may be underlying the behavior.
