Christian Life: Heart Healthy

Without Christ THE HEART OF THE MATTER  God used the word "heart(s)" in the Bible (KJV) 867 times. Most of His instruction is about the care and keeping of our hearts. He tells us, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life." (Proverb 4:23).  Also, His promises are for peace, love, hope, forgiveness...heart issues.  Read More...                      Also see BIBLE QUOTES ON...Heart Issues.

HEART HEALTHY, TRUE HEART. Our cardiac health receives so much attention these days because of all we've learned about what keeps our hearts healthy...and what prevents them from functioning properly. While important, we tend to focus disproportionately on our physical strength, which is linked to our mortal existence, and ignore our true heart health, our emotional heart, which is linked to eternity.  Read More...

THE HEART OF THE MATTER, cont.
The argument can be made that what matters most, is matters of the heart. It follows then that while it shows itself in many ways, our dysfunction and sin "springs" from our troubled hearts. Proverbs 12:25; Mark 7:20-22; Jeremiah 17:9

And our troubled hearts lead to troubled relationships with our spouses, family, friends, church, work, and community. We feel lost and search in the world for something to fix things. Sometimes this search becomes desperate the more we focus on the world and are estranged from God (See diagram above). If we do find something, it is hollow and shortlived since everything hinges on our relationship with Jesus. If this is healthy, if

ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS ASK
And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ (Galatians 4:6-7).

18 The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit (Psalms 34:18).

HEART HEALTHY, cont.
It is our passion, love, fear, hurts, hopes and joy, our heart that bond us in relationships. It bonds us to our shared experiences, it bonds us to our causes, to each other, and most critically, to Jesus. In the Bible, God makes it very clear that He values heart health and that he is after our hearts first and fully. Most of His instruction is about the care and feeding of our heart.

This care is challenging though. We receive a double message from society about our emotions. We value a certain distance between people that often does not have room for emotions. And somewhere along the line, we adopted the general belief that having emotions is weak and a flaw in character. On the other hand, Health professionals have learned what God already told us, we should be fully alive, fully human which includes expressing our feelings, the good, the bad and the ugly. Suppressing them contributes to physical, psychological and relationship problems. This mixed message is at best confusing and at worst, creates a conflict that can be tormenting if our hearts hold a lot of raw emotion from negative experiences and insecurities. Keeping these feeling inside is like having an open sore that won't heal. Each time we bump it, it bleed again and hurts just as much. Allowing ourselves to embrace feelings and express them in appropriate ways, has the opposite effect. We heal and are less susceptible to the next "bump" because we have gained experience and strength from walking through the feelings.

27 Peace I leave with you,
My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.                                       Matthew 5:8

2 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
