MEET CRAIG
"G'Day Mate! When you meet Craig, you are greeted by a booming voice, a welcoming
Aussie accent, and a smile that makes you laugh. Anywhere he
goes, everyone he encounters, is touched by his heart and his passion
for the Lord and His people.
I first encountered Craig when I laid on a gurney waiting for major
surgery to start. i was scared and cold, wondering how
surgery would go, whether I would wake up in pain...even wondering IF I
would wake up. As I was looking at the ceiling,
wondering...the booming voice came first, "G'Day," in the unmistakable
Aussie accent. "How are you doing?" he asked, then added,
"You are going to be just fine, I am here to take good care of you."
His voice was kind, his manner gentle and there was
something very compelling in his presence. While the person
of Craig was undoubtedly good-natured and his experience as an
operating room nurse apparent, the compassion I experiences was that
only present in believers who are willing to be used as vessels of
Christ's love. I felt safe, protected and no longer afraid.
I encountered Craig again later when my husband and I attended the same
church as him and his family. We became members of the small
group Craig led and again, I was touched by the experience.
Craig prepared for group each week, reading studying and
planning. Although that gave the group substance, that really
wasn't what made the difference. Being in Craig's family
group meant being involved in the work of Jesus. Craig made
sure he attended to the lives of the people he shepherded. If
you were moving, his question was, "So, where are we? Are we
using our cars or renting a truck? And how many people do you
think we need" A storm was brewing, his response was, "Let's
go put up the Jones' storm shutters, then the Smith's and we'll finish
with yours. Going on vacation, "What is the plan for the dog?
Let us take him, " he'd say.
Craig didn't ask, being involved and supportive of each other was not a
question, it was a given. And he was always first to start
the job and last to finish.
Over a two-year period of time, he lead many families through bible
study and ministry. He taught us about fellowship and family.
He taught us about giving. But most of all, he
taught us that it wasn't about him...or us..it was all about Jesus.
Craig is truly loving they neighbor in action!
